On Becoming Abraham Lincoln

Morse Jr. in 1893.With eloquence and dignity, he gives us a biography of the great leader when Lincoln was still within living memory. Unclouded by the scrim of two succeeding centuries, it renders a palpable difference from contemporary accounts in how we see Lincoln's history, and through it, our own.

We have reprised Morse's biography through Lincoln's first inauguration, then enhanced it with new facsimiles of historical documents. Among them are Lincoln's final handwritten changes to his inaugural address, seen here for the first time in their newly digitized format.
